Why Sober Girls Love a Morning Routine (And How to Use Them to Achieve Your Big Goals)

Sober and love a morning routine? The two go hand in hand.

When women give up alcohol they often incorporate exercise into their daily routines. When that exercise is scheduled for early morning, they know they need to be bright-eyed for it. Often they’ll create a strict morning routine with exercise, journaling and affirmations as part of their sober pillars. Routines bring structure, a lifestyle framework and can help you achieve your big life goals.

Why sober girls love a morning routine

  1. Positive frame of mind.

    How you spend the morning directly influences how you spend the rest of the day. If you lie around feeling groggy and drag yourself out of bed, you’re not going to be as productive as someone who bounced out of bed ready for action. A morning routine gets you on track and puts you in a positive frame of mind.

  2. You are in the driver’s seat.

    A morning routine gives you a sense of structure and control. YOU are in control of your day, rather than your day controlling you. You have ‘somewhere to be’, a commitment to yourself you stick to. When you have a morning routine you are more organised and less stressed (that means less vulnerable to drinking triggers).

  3. Productivity. A morning routine increases your productivity. When you are in control of the day and achieving tasks as soon as you wake up, you are more likely to finish tasks throughout the day. Plus, when you achieve tasks in the morning you have more free time at night for true relaxation.

  4. A boost in energy. When you start the day the same way each time with healthy habits, your energy levels start to soar. Your body gets used to early morning exercise and your nervous system loves early morning meditation. 

  5. Sleep quality. A morning routine dramatically helps with sleep patterns. Consistently waking up at the same time has an impact on the quality of your sleep. You then handle stress better and enjoy a feeling of enhanced calm throughout the day.

How to create a morning routine – and achieve your big goals…

  1. Decide what you would like to achieve – greater mindfulness, organisation, weight loss or fitness, self-care.

  2. Plan to wake up early with an activity that aligns with your goal that is realistic and enjoyable. Mindfulness goals might include journaling. Weight loss goals might include exercise. Self-care might include affirmations or meditation time.

  3. Devote 30 minutes to an hour to your routine and plan each action point. That might be; ‘Wake up at 5 am, make coffee and plan my work day for 30 minutes so I’m organised, yoga for 30 minutes and a healthy smoothie.’ It might be ‘Wake up at 6 am, take the dog for a walk and make a healthy breakfast’.

  4. Manifest your goal by seeing yourself as if you have already achieved it. Tell yourself you are a morning person. Tell yourself you are organised and in control. 

  5. Build on your morning routine with joy in mind. You may find you don’t like journaling but you love meditation. You may find all you want to do is go for a run before your family wakes up. Whatever your morning routine looks like, make sure it’s enjoyable, aligns with your goals and gets you out of bed!
