For many women, hitting 40 can feel like a turning point. Our bodies start to change, energy levels fluctuate, and suddenly, what worked for us in our 30s just isn’t cutting it anymore. But instead of seeing this as a decline, I see it as an opportunity - a chance to step into a new phase of life with energy, confidence, and a deep understanding of what our bodies truly need.
So, what does thriving after 40 mean to me? It means waking up each day feeling energised, strong, and in control of my health and well-being. It means making choices that fuel my body and mind, rather than depleting them. And most importantly, it means designing a lifestyle that feels sustainable and joyful - one that doesn’t rely on cheap dopamine hits for a boost but instead taps into real, lasting vitality.
Here’s what thriving after 40 looks like in action, and how to do it…
1. Waking Up Energised and Ready for the Day
Gone are the days of dragging myself out of bed, already exhausted before the day has even begun. Thriving means having the energy and vitality to do what I want - whether that’s exercising, working, or spending quality time with my family - without needing an afternoon nap to get through it.
For me, this means understanding what foods and habits support my energy levels, and sticking to those choices at least 80% of the time. Because when I fuel my body properly, I don’t just survive the day - I thrive through it.
2. Prioritising Sleep for Ultimate Well-Being
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that sleep is everything. Good sleep is the foundation for energy, mental clarity, and overall health. But let’s be real - we all have nights where stress, hormones, or life circumstances get in the way.
Thriving after 40 means having a solid sleep routine that works most of the time. It means understanding the role of hormones, knowing what to do when sleep gets disrupted, and having strategies in place to support deep, restorative rest.
3. Eating for Health, Not Just to Get By
Thriving isn’t about dieting - it’s about eating in a way that truly nourishes me. I don’t eat to avoid emotions or to fill a void. I eat to fuel my body, to maintain a steady metabolism, and to prevent unwanted weight gain, especially around the midsection (hello, menopause belly!).
Having a rock-solid eating plan that feels easy and sustainable has changed everything for me. I don’t feel deprived. I don’t have wild cravings. Instead, I feel in control, knowing exactly how to balance my meals for fat loss, steady energy, and long-term health.
4. Managing Stress in a Healthy Way
Let’s be honest - stress isn’t going anywhere. But instead of letting it run my life, I’ve learned how to navigate it in a way that keeps me balanced and resilient.
Thriving after 40 means having a toolkit of strategies to calm my nervous system when stress hits. Whether it’s movement, breathwork, or setting better boundaries, I now know how to return to a place of peace and control - without reaching for alcohol, sugar, or mindless distractions.
5. Taking Control of My Long-Term Health
A big part of thriving is knowing that I’m doing everything I can to protect my future self. I want to be active, vibrant, and strong - not just now, but for decades to come.
That’s why I’ve educated myself on how to prevent chronic illness, optimise my metabolism, and keep my body strong as I age. When you have the right information, making the best choices for your health becomes easy and empowering.
6. Finding Joy in the Everyday Moments
For years, I relied on alcohol and sugar to give me those little dopamine hits - but now? I create real joy in my life, every single day.
Whether it’s through movement, creativity, connection, or simply appreciating the small moments, I no longer need artificial highs. Instead, I’ve built a life where fun, pleasure, and excitement are woven into my daily routine.
