Alcohol-Free Holidays: How to Have Them and How to Love Them

I used to think alcohol-free holidays would be BORING. In fact, I rarely even imagined a holiday without late afternoon boozing in the sun, and nights drinking copious amounts of wine. Did I want to go on alcohol-free holidays? No. Did I end up LOVING alcohol-free holidays when I finally quit drinking for good? Yes.

Alcohol-free holidays are genuinely relaxing, invigorating and a blast. They take some planning and getting used to but once we do, we can bring our best selves, and stay present and aligned with what the holiday is meant to be about – rejuvenation.

Here’s how to have alcohol-free holidays - and love them…

Switch Your Mindset to Self-Care

The first step to enjoying an alcohol-free holiday is to shift your mindset from one of deprivation to one of self-care. Instead of focusing on what you're giving up, think about what you're gaining – clarity, energy, and the ability to fully experience each moment of your holiday. Embrace this time as an opportunity to nurture your body and mind, and to indulge in activities that truly nourish your soul. That might include early morning walks, a spa day, hikes, yoga class, time in nature. Whatever relaxes you and ignites your soul.

Plan Your Trip to Include Plenty of Outdoor Activities

One of the best ways to enjoy an alcohol-free holiday is to immerse yourself in nature. Plan your trip to include plenty of outdoor activities like hiking, swimming, surfing, fishing, or simply strolling through a scenic park. Not only will these activities keep you occupied and distracted from any cravings, but they will also boost your mood and overall sense of wellbeing.

Do Your Own Thing

While it's great to spend time with friends and family during the holidays, don't be afraid to carve out some time for yourself. Whether it's exploring a local market, indulging in a spa day, or simply relaxing with a good book, taking time for yourself can help you recharge and stay grounded during your alcohol-free holiday. If the group decides on a late night get-together at a bar, put your own needs first, and decide not to go.

Add in More Fun and Adventure

Who says you need alcohol to have fun? Use your alcohol-free holiday as an opportunity to try new things and step outside of your comfort zone. Whether it's trying different food, taking a dance class, or embarking on a spontaneous adrenalin adventure, embracing new experiences can help you create lasting memories and enjoy your holiday to the fullest.

Stay Connected to Your Sober Support Group While You're Away

Just because you're on holiday doesn't mean you have to be disconnected from your sober support group. Staying connected can provide you with the accountability, encouragement and support you need to stay alcohol-free during your holiday.

Quick Tips:

  • Take AF drinks.

  • Play it forward when you get a craving and remember it passes!

  • Know that there will be triggers and prepare for them - what are you going to do in that moment.

  • Set an intention to enjoy the early mornings.

  • Exercise!

  • Treasure and soak up every moment.

  • Avoid bars if you can.

Having an alcohol-free holiday is not only possible but can also be incredibly rewarding. By switching your mindset to one of self-care, doing your own thing, and staying connected to your sober support group, you can not only have a fabulous alcohol-free holiday but also truly love and cherish the experience. So go ahead, embrace your alcohol-free lifestyle, and enjoy every moment of your holiday to the fullest.
